Originally classed with the Cuculidae, the coucals (crow-pheasants) have been given a separate family by Sibley and Monroe. Howard-Moore still class the Centropodinae as a subfamily of Cuculidae. |
1. General names
Chinese: The coucals are popularly known as 毛鸡 máo-jī 'hairy fowl', at least in the south of China, where they are actually found. Naturalists call them 鸦鹃 yā-juān 'crow cuckoo', reflecting an identification with the cuckoos. Similarly for the Taiwanese name 番鵑 fān-juān 'foreign cuckoo', which follows the Japanese usage (which, in turn, seems to be borrowed from Chinese). |
Japanese: Japanese uses the Chinese name バンケン banken, meaning 'foreign cuckoo' (番鵑). |
Vietnamese: The Vietnamese word for 'coucal' is Bìm bịp, from the bird's cry of 'bìm bịp' during the breeding season (March-July). |

3. Notes
The distribution of the Centropodidae in East Asia can be found at Tzung-Su Ding's Distribution of Cuculiformes in East Asia. |
The list of Birds of the World edited by Cheng Tso-Hsin (completed and published posthumously in 2002) reserves the name 小鸦鹃 xiǎo yā-juān 'small crow cuckoo' for C. toutou, giving C. bengalensis the name 印度小鸦鹃 Yìndù xiǎo yā-juān 'Indian small crow cuckoo'. |
