1. General names
In Chinese, the honey guides are literally known as 响蜜䴕 xiǎng-mì-liè 'guide honey woodpecker'. (If you can't see the character, place your mouse over the top.) Only one honeyguide is found in China's far southwest. Unlike their African cousins, the honey guides of Asia do not have the habit of leading people or animals to honey. Accordingly, the Chinese name must be based on English, not on popular local usage (if this exists). |
In Japanese the honey guides are known as ミツオシエ mitsu-oshie (蜜教え in characters) meaning 'honey show-er' or 'honey guide'. They are not found in Japan. |
