1. General names
Chinese: Known as 犀鸟 xī-niǎo 'rhinoceros birds', the hornbills are found in the far south of China, mainly Yunnan. |
Japanese: Not found in Japan. The name is the same as the Chinese (サイチョウ saichō, written 犀鳥, 'rhinoceros bird'). |
Vietnamese: Since they are more familiar to the Vietnamese, it's not surprising that there are three different names for the hornbills. Of these, only Hồng hoàng is found in everyday dictionaries.

3. Notes
The distribution of the Bucerotidae in East Asia can be found at Tzung-Su Ding's Distribution of GALBULIFORMES in East Asia. |
1. It is now generally agreed that the pied hornbills should be divided into two species: Anthracoceros coronatus (Indian/Malabar pied hornbill) and A. albirostris (Oriental pied hornbill). The subspecies found in China and Southeast Asia is A. albirostris albirostris (Asian pied hornbill). A. coronatus is found only in India and Sri Lanka. Cheng Tso Hsin classifies the Chinese populations as A. coronatus albirostris (Malabar pied hornbill). Vo and Nguyen assign Vietnamese populations to the outdated A. malabaricus (Indian pied hornbill). |
2. Anorrhinus tickelli (Brown hornbill) has two subspecies, A. tickelli tickelli (Tickell's brown hornbill) and A. tickelli austeni (Austen's brown hornbill). Zheng Guangmei's list of birds, presumably following Peters, divides them into two species, A. tickelli (Rusty-cheeked hornbill) and A. austeni (Brown hornbill), of which A. austeni is marked as occurring in China.
