Under Sibley and Monroe, the Malaconotinae (wood shrikes) are a subfamily of the Corvidae. The other subfamilies in East and Southeast Asia are the Cinclosomatinae, the Pachycephalinae, the Corvinae (jays, crows, etc.), the Dicrurinae (drongoes, fantails, etc.), and the Aegithininae (ioras). Howard & Moore 2003 treat the two Asian genera of this subfamily, Tephrodornis and Philentoma, as Genera incertae sedis. This newly created subfamily puts a distance between the wood shrikes and the Oriolini (minivets, cuckoo shrikes, and flycatcher shrikes), with which they were previously grouped. The subfamily is sometimes called the 丛林伯劳亚科 cónglín bóláu yà-kē or 丛䴗亚科 cóng-jú yà-kē (both meaning 'forest shrikes') in Chinese. The Japanese name ヤブモズ亜科 yabu-mozu a-ka ('thicket shrike', written 薮百舌 or 薮鵙亜科) is also used for the subfamily. |
1. General names
Chinese: The Chinese word for 'wood shrike' is 林䴗 lín-jú ('forest shrike'), apparently a direct translation from the English. (䴗 may also be written |
Japanese: Not found in Japan. Known as モズサンショウクイ mozu sanshō-kui 'shrike prickly-ash eaters', written 鵙山椒食 or 鵙山椒食い. The name 'prickly-ash eater' is shared with the minivets, cuckoo shrikes, and flycatcher shrikes. |
Vietnamese: In Vietnamese, the wood shrikes are known as Phường chèo nâu ('brown phuong cheo'). I have translated phuong cheo as 'minivet' in the table below, but it is actually broadly applied to all the cuckoo shrikes, minivets, and flycatcher shrikes (Oriolini), as well as the wood shrikes. Philentoma pyrhopterum is Đớp ruồi cánh hung 'reddish-winged fly catcher' in Vietnamese, reflecting its earlier assignment to the Monarchidae (Monarch flycatchers) under Howard-Moore. |

3. Notes
The distribution of the Malaconitinae in East Asia can be found at Tzung-Su Ding's Distribution of Dicrurinae in East Asia. |
Except in Chinese, the names all attest to the earlier identification with the cuckoo shrikes, minivets, and flycatcher shrikes, now a part of the Oriolini (Corvinae) according to Sibley-Monroe. |
