China is rich in pheasants and so is the language, although the average modern Chinese is likely to know only the peafowl, the quail, and the common barnyard fowl. The ordinary word for 'fowl' (鸡 jī) is most commonly used for the Phasianiadae, as summarised below. Many, however, are specialist rather than popular names. In fact, layman often simply call pheasants 鸡 jī 'fowl' or 野鸡 yě-jī 'wild fowl'.

Japanese:
The general name for 'pheasants' is キジ kiji (written 雉 or 雉子 in Chinese characters), which normally refers in its unmarked form to Phasianus colchicus, the Common pheasant. The following are not normally considered to be キジ kiji:
ウズラ uzura, written 鶉, refers to the 'quails'.
シャコ shako, written 鷓鴣, is from Chinese word zhègū. シャコ shako is mainly applied to several types of partridge.

Trĩ, from Chinese 雉 zhì, used for the Common pheasant and the Crested argus.
Công or Cuông, used for the Peacock.
