The Tringinae (sandpipers, curlews, knots, stints, etc.) are a subfamily of the Scolopacidae. The other subfamily is the Scolopacinae (woodcock and snipe).

1. General names

Chinese: All members of the Tringinae are known as in Chinese.

Japanese: Most members of the Tringinae are called シギ shigi in Japanese, written with the same character as Chinese (). Shigi can also be written , a home-grown character created by the Japanese themselves.

Several of the stints are known as トウネン tōnen, written 当年 meaning 'this year'. (One suggestion is that they were so named because of their small size, that is, they were born 'this year'.) The Broad-billed sandpiper is known as a キリアイ kiri-ai (錐合).

Vietnamese: In Vietnamese, members of the Tringinae are known as Dẽ. However, the members of Limosa, Numenius, and Tringa (including Xenus, Actitis, and Heteroscelus) are technically known as Choắt , a term that does not appear in most non-specialist dictionaries.

Another word for the snipe is Mỏ nhác or Mỏ nhát (Southern dialects).
