Japanese: The Japanese word for 'stork' is コウノトリ kō-no-tori, literally 'stork bird'. This is written with the single Chinese character . The name コウノトリ kō-no-tori is usually applied to the White stork Ciconia ciconia (or C. boyciana, depending on the classification). Other types of stork are named コウ -kō, also written with the character , e.g. ナベコウ nabe-kō 'pot stork' (Ciconia nigra), written 鍋鸛.

The storks are sometimes known as コウヅル kō-zuru 'stork crane', written 鸛鶴.

Vietnamese: The Vietnamese name for the storks is Hạc, derived from Chinese meaning 'crane'. Indeed, despite the ornithological usage, Hạc still retains the meaning 'crane' in Vietnamese.

A number of storks are known as , a generic name for herons, cranes, and storks. Another word for 'stork' is Chim khàng.

The adjutants are known as Già đẩy.
