1. General names
Chinese: The Chinese word for 'stork' is 鹳 guàn. The adjutants are called 秃鹳 tū-guàn 'bald stork'. |
Japanese: The Japanese word for 'stork' is コウノトリ kō-no-tori, literally 'stork bird'. This is written with the single Chinese character 鸛. The name コウノトリ kō-no-tori is usually applied to the White stork Ciconia ciconia (or C. boyciana, depending on the classification). Other types of stork are named コウ -kō, also written with the character 鸛, e.g. ナベコウ nabe-kō 'pot stork' (Ciconia nigra), written 鍋鸛. The storks are sometimes known as コウヅル kō-zuru 'stork crane', written 鸛鶴. |
Vietnamese: The Vietnamese name for the storks is Hạc, derived from Chinese 鹤 hè meaning 'crane'. Indeed, despite the ornithological usage, Hạc still retains the meaning 'crane' in Vietnamese. A number of storks are known as Cò, a generic name for herons, cranes, and storks. Another word for 'stork' is Chim khàng. The adjutants are known as Già đẩy. |
