Nectariniidae

The only subfamily of Nectariniidae represented in Asia is the Nectariniinae. Under Sibley-Monroe, this subfamily subsumes what Howard-Moore consider separate families, the Dicaeidae (flowerpeckers) and Nectariniidae (sunbirds and spider hunters).

Chinese: This group of birds is found only in the far south of China. The flowerpeckers are known as 啄花鸟 zhuó-huā-niǎo 'peck-flower bird'. The sunbirds are known as 太阳鸟 tàiyáng-niǎo 'sun-bird'. Some members of the Nectariinii (namely, members of Hypogramma and Nectarinia) are known as 花蜜鸟 huā-mì-niǎo 'nectar bird'. The spider hunters are known as 捕蛛鸟 bǔ-zhū-niǎo 'catch-spider-bird'.

Japanese: None of the Nectariniidae are found in Japan. The flowerpeckers are known as ハナドリ hana-dori 'flower bird', written 花鳥. The sunbirds are known as タイヨウチョウ taiyō-chō 'sun-bird', written 太陽鳥, the same name as in Chinese. Occasionally seen is the English form サンバード san-bādo 'sunbird'. The spider hunters are known as クモカリドリ kumo-kari-dori 'spider-hunting birds', written in Chinese characters as 蜘蛛狩り鳥.

Vietnamese: The Nectariniidae are found extensively in Vietnam. The flowerpeckers are known as Chim sâu (Chim su in Central dialects). The sunbirds are known as Hút mật or 'honey/nectar suckers'. The spider hunters are known as Bắp chuối, meaning literally 'banana flower'.
