(咬鹃科 Yǎo-juān kē キヌバネドリ科 Kinu-bane-dori-ka Họ Nuốc)

(Note: Some CJV Family and subfamily names under Monroe and Sibley are only tentative at this stage)

1. General names

Chinese: The Chinese name for the trogons is 咬鹃 yǎo-juān, literally 'biting cuckoo'. The Red-headed trogon is found across southern China; the others occur only in the far corner of Yunnan.

Japanese: The trogons are known as キヌバネドリ kinu-bane-dori in Japanese, meaning 'silk-winged bird' and written 絹羽鳥. They are not found in Japan.

Vietnamese: In Vietnamese, the trogons are known as Nuốc. However, this name does not occur in ordinary dictionaries.

3. Notes

Distribution of the Trogonidae in East Asia can be seen at Tzung-Su Ding's Distribution of TROGONIFORMES in East Asia.

As is commonly the case, the Vietnamese descriptions of species are quite different from the English, Chinese, or Japanese! (E.g., Red-headed trogon is 'red-headed' in all but Vietnamese, where it becomes 'red-bellied').
