1. General names
Chinese: The Tytonidae are all 'owls' (鸮 xiāo) in Chinese. The names appear to be direct translations from the English names, including 仓鸮 cāng-xiāo ('barn owl') and 草鸮 cǎo-xiāo ('grass owl').
The name 猴面鹰 hóu-miàn-yīng 'monkey-faced hawk' is a more popular name for the Grass owl, but may be confined to Southern dialects.
Japanese: The Tytonidae are known as メンフクロウ men-fukurō (面梟) or 'masked owls' in Japanese. Only Tyto capensis occurs in Japan.
Vietnamese: In Vietnamese, the Tytonidae are known as Cú lợn or 'pig owls'. In Southern dialects they are known as Cú heo, using heo, the Southern word for 'pig'.
