A-Zhen

A-Zhen (not her real name, she borrowed it off a friend) is a friend of a friend.

A-Zhen is in her early twenties, a member of the Hlai people (known in Chinese as the Li) of central and southern Hainan. She left school after primary school and most of her friends are now married with children. A-Zhen says she doesn't envy them. Her favourite pastimes are going to discos and playing mah-jong.

Besides Hlai, A-Zhen speaks Mandarin with a strong accent. She says adamantly that she doesn't speak Hainanese, the language of the Han Chinese in Hainan.

This is a collection of photos I took of A-Zhen in Shanghai and Hainan.
