Shadan-ki

Shadan-ki is a Chinese-style character compound (i.e., a compound using on readings) meaning 'boom' or 'barrier' at a station or level crossing. This is correctly written in Chinese characters as . All three characters in the compound are found in the standard Joyo Kanji list.

Shadanki o kuguranaide kudasai.
Please don't go under the boom gate.

However, sha (read saegiru in its kun reading) was not a part of the old Toyo Kanji. It was added to the list of approved characters in the shift to the Joyo Kanji. Thus, there are still signs around that reflect the previous non-approved status of the character . One was found in the same station as the above sign:

Abunai!! Shadan-ki o kuguranaide kudasai
Eki-chō

Danger!!
Don't go under the boom
Station master
