The Careers Advice Notice (Book 5)

This is not sparkling language: it is merely a notice to fifth-years to attend a careers advice session. But the language is interesting, nonetheless. Note how English does not use a direct imperative ('Fifth-years, come to this meeting!') or a modal auxiliary ('Fifth-years must come to this meeting'), but an impersonal passive construction ('Fifth-years are required to come to this meeting').

English

CAREERS ADVICE All fifth-years are required to attend a short meeting with their Head of House during the first week of the summer term to discuss their future careers. Times of individual appointments are listed below.

 

Simplified Chinese (China)

就业咨询 所有五年级学生必须在夏季学期的第一周参加一次简短的会谈，与他们的学院院长讨论未来的就业问题。具体时间列表如下。

Jiùyè zīxún Suǒyǒu wǔnián-jí xuésheng bìxū zài xiàjí xuéqī de dì-yī zhōu cānjiā yī-cì jiǎndān de huìtán, yǔ tāmen de xuéyuàn yuànzhǎng tǎolùn wèilái de jiùyè wèntí. Jùtǐ shíjiān lièbiǎo rú xià.

Chinese uses 必须 bìxū, a more direct word meaning 'must' or 'be required to'. The use of 他们 tā-men 'their' in translating 'their Head of House' is translationese.

 

Traditional Chinese (Taiwan)

就業咨詢 全體五年級生都必須在本夏季學期的第一個禮拜，接受各學院導師的面談，討論就業前途。個別面談的時間公佈如下。

Jiùyè zīxún Quántǐ wǔniánjí-sheng dōu bìxū zài běn xiàjí xuéqī de dì-yīge lǐbài, jiēshòu gè xuéyuàn dǎoshī de miàntán, tǎolùn jiùyè qiántú. Gèbié miàntán de shíjiān gōngbù rú xià.

The Taiwanese version also uses 必須 bìxū ('must' or 'be required to'). The first sentence of this translation (although not the second) is more natural than the Mainland version. Note the use of 禮拜 for 'week', which is not highly acceptable in written Chinese and would definitely not be acceptable in a notice like this on the Mainland (see Days of the Week).

 

Japanese

進路指導 夏学期の最初の週に、五年生は全員、寮監と短時間面接し、将来の職業について相談すること。 個人面接の時間は左記リストのとおり。

Shinro shidō Natsu gakki no saisho no shū ni, gonen-sei wa zen'in, ryōkan to tan-jikan mensetsu shi, shōrai no shokugyō ni tsuite sōdan suru koto. Kojin mensetsu no jikan wa saki risuto no tōri.

To translate 'be required to', the Japanese translator uses すること suru koto, a common way of making 'impersonalised commands' in Japanese.

 

Vietnamese

'Their' is translated twice as của mình, which is not very natural in Vietnamese.
