This is when Saint Exupéry deploys one of his sudden startling images, poetic but strangely out of place: Je sentais battre son cœur comme celui d'un oiseau qui meurt, quand on l'a tiré à la carabine. "I felt his heart beating like the heart of a dying bird, shot with someone's rifle..." (Woods' translation).
It's an arresting image, pulling the reader up short with a gasp of horror; a wrenching image of violence, pain, sadness, and impending death.
But this hunting context does not seem to have been fully grasped by many of the translators, as a look at certain aspects of the translation will reveal:
