The Hogwarts School Song (Book 1)

The Hogwarts school song, which everybody sang to a different tune under Dumbledore's direction. Looking at the carefree, zany words of this song, could we imagine how dark the tone of later books would become? The song appears in Book 1, Chapter 7 (The Sorting Hat).

School Song

Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts,
Teach us something, please,
Whether we be old and bald
Or young with scabby knees,
Our heads could do with filling
With some interesting stuff,
For now they're bare and full of air,
Dead flies and bits of fluff,
So teach us things worth knowing,
Bring back what we've forgot,
Just do your best, we'll do the rest,
And learn until our brains all rot.

Note that 'Hoggy Warty' plays on the underlying meaning of 'Hogwarts', i.e., 'hog + wart'. One possible translation would be to use words along the lines of 'pig blister'.

The Mainland version does not translate 'Hoggy Warty', nor does it even try to reproduce the effect, although the last two occurrences of 霍格沃茨 Huògéwōcì are given in a slightly different font.

The Mainland version is based on the Taiwanese version (below). Despite certain changes, the common source is easily discernible.

'Our heads could do with filling' is incorrectly translated as 我们的头脑可以接纳 Wǒmen de tóunǎo kěyǐ jiēnà 'our heads can accommodate'. The correct meaning is 'our heads would benefit from filling'.

'Bits of fluff' is translated as 鸡毛蒜皮 jīmáo-suànpí ('chicken feathers and garlic skins'), a conventional expression for trivia. This is a very nice translation, although obviously as much modelled on the Taiwanese translation below as on the English.

'Until our brains all rot' is translated as the colourful 直到化为粪土 zhídào huà wéi fèntǔ 'until they turn into dung and dirt'.

'Hoggy Warty' is not translated. The effect is reproduced by reduplicating the first two syllables: 霍霍格格 Huòhuògégé.

The meaning of 'Hoggy Warty' is not translated. The sound effect is recreated with ホグホグ ワツワツ Hoguhogu, Watsuwatsu.

The Japanese translator takes considerable liberties with the form and sense of the original. The result is succinct, coherent, and faithful to the spirit of the English.

Bài ca của trường

Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hogwarts

The Vietnamese translator neither translates the meaning nor reproduces the sound effect of 'Hoggy Warty'.
