Household Pests

In the Muggle world, household pests refer to insects such as cockroaches, ants, and termites, which are the object of so-called 'pest control' services. A broader definition covers rats, moles, gophers, and tomcats.

Translations tend to waver between interpretations referring to Muggle insect pests and those referring to pests in a broader sense, such as garden gnomes and doxies.

The Simplified Chinese (China) and Japanese translations both use a term meaning 'harmful insects' (害虫 hài-chóng and 害虫 gaichū).

In Book 5, the Vietnamese translator uses 'destructive band in the house' or 'destructive things in the house' (bọn phá hoại trong nhà.

The new Mongolian translation uses гэрийн хортон geriin khoton, literally 'malicious / injurious / harmful things of the house', a term that is used for insect pests.

Some translations, however, use more expansive expressions that include (or are largely restricted to) animals.

The Taiwanese translator uses 害獸 hàishòu 'harmful beasts' in Book 2.

The previous Mongolian translation uses Яршигтай гэрийн амьтид 'troublesome household animals'.

At Book 2, the Vietnamese version uses bọn phá hoại vườn 'garden destructive things', referring assumedly to pests in and around the house. This translation uses the verb xử lý 'to solve, settle, get rid of' (from Chinese 處理).

Guide to...

Most translations use words directly equivalent to 'guide'.

The Taiwanese translation features the conventional Chinese equivalent to 'guide', 指南 zhǐnán, literally meaning 'point south'. The word derives from an ancient Chinese vehicle fitted out with a human figure that always pointed south, no matter which way the vehicle moved. (Also used at The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection; From Egg to Inferno, A Dragon Keeper's Guide; A Guide to Medieval Sorcery; A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration; Guide to Advanced Transfiguration; and The Dream Oracle — Mainland translation only.)

The Japanese translation uses ガイドブック gaidobukku 'guidebook' (from English). (Also used at A Guide to Medieval Sorcery and Handbook of Do-It-Yourself-Broomcare.)

The Vietnamese translator chooses the word hướng dẫn, which is created from the Chinese elements 嚮 'direction, orientation' and 引 'lead'. However, 嚮引 xiàngyǐn is not current in modern Chinese. (Also used at The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection; From Egg to Inferno, A Dragon Keeper's Guide; A Guide to Medieval Sorcery; A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration; and Guide to Advanced Transfiguration.)

The previous Mongolian translation uses гарын авлага gariin avlag 'hand book'. (Also used at A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration and The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection — new translation.)

The new Mongolian translation uses лавлах lavlakh, a verb meaning 'confirm, make sure'. This is an abbreviation of лавлах бичиг lavlakh bichig literally 'making-sure book', 'a reference, guide', a term for reference books. (Also used at A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration — previous translation.)

The Mainland Chinese translation makes an interesting departure from the English by calling the book 吉德罗・洛哈特教你清除家庭害虫 Jídéluó Luòhātè jiāo nǐ qīngchú jiātíng hàichóng 'Gilderoy Lockhart Teaches You (How) to Get Rid of Household Insect Pests'

Gilderoy Lockhart's

Most translations use a genitive or possessive form of 'Gilderoy Lockhart'. The exceptions are:

The Vietnamese version at Book 5 says Guide to Pests in the House by Gilderoy Lockhart. This is probably an error in italicisation, but the result is that Gilderoy Lockhart's name is left out of the title.

The new Mongolian version places Гилдэрой Локхарт at the start and follows it with a colon.
